Step 1: Meet the SAAQ's Requirements
HAVE A GOOD DRIVING RECORD:
- The applicant must have less than 4 demerit points entered on their driving record.
- When applying for a heavy vehicles license, you are eligible if you have 3 demerit points; 4 points is not eligible.
- However, demerit points are removed from the driving record 24 months after an individual is found guilty of an infraction.
- The applicant’s driver’s license must not have been suspended or revoked in the past 2 years.
- The SAAQ will only look at suspensions that resulted from an accumulation of demerit points or a driving-related Criminal Code offense.
HAVE THE NECESSARY DRIVING EXPERIENCE:
Option 1:
The applicant must have at least 36 months of driving experience with a Class 5 driver’s license (i.e a car). The 36 months is an accumulation of the probationary license and regular driver’s license.
Option 2:
The applicant must have at least 24 months of driving experience with a Class 5 driver’s license (i.e a car). The 36 months is an accumulation of the probationary license and regular driver’s license.
AND
Must have completed 260 hours of driving a Class 1 vehicle on public roads, along with having completed a 40 hours of road practice with a driving school.
So which option do you fall under? If you 24 months of driving experience, give us a call. We can get you the necessary hours behind the wheel to ensure your eligibility for the Class 1 license.
- To be able to proceed to Step 3, the SAAQ demands that candidates under go a vision test that is performed at an SAAQ service outlet. Candidates are also given a medical form to be filled out by a doctor. You can contact your family doctor to complete the medical form.
- If you do not have a family doctor, any general MD can be consulted. However, CLSCs do not aid in completing the medical form.
- Once completed, the form is to be submitted at the SAAQ, if everything goes well, we are on to Step 3.
The purpose of registering for a driving course is to get expert help and guidance to successfully pass your theory test and driving test. Our step 3 does just that!
The SAAQ has set out some recommended study material to prepare for the theory test.
- Driver’s Handbook
- Driving a Heavy Vehicle
- We take it one step further and offer an Online Driver’s Education Program (ODEP)
- After the successful completion of step 3, there are some important factors to consider.
- Candidates must wait the 30 days set in place by the SAAQ, prior to enrolling for the road test. The 30 days begin from the day they pass their theory test.
- During the 30 days period, candidates are encouraged to enrol in a driving course. The SAAQ recommends completing 20 hours of supervised driving prior to attempting the road test.
- The road test consists of two parts; driving & pre-trip inspection
We offer a variety of driving courses that are tailored to each student’s need. However, the following course layout establishes the norm for the driving course:
- 20 hours of observation at the instructor’s discretion, normally consists of two students and the instructor. Observation hours can be applied to different sections of the program, i.e shifting, pre-trip inspection, back-up etc.
- 20 hours of practical training, traditionally performed as a one-to-one session with the instructor. However, can be accompanied by an observing student. The practical section of the driving course covers all the aspect needed to successfully pass the exam, i.e driving, back-up and pre-trip inspection.
Step 5: Enrol for the SAAQ Road Exam
Finally, we are now at the last step. Once candidates have successfully completed the practical training in accordance with the instructor’s guidelines, it’s time to take the road test at the SAAQ.
The practical test at the SAAQ has two parts:
- Driving: students are tested on a variety of safety aspects relative to driving a heavy vehicle. Including but not limited to safety margins, control of the vehicle, correctly upshifting and downshifting, navigating the flow of traffic and backup/docking.
- Pre-trip Inspection: The PTI has to be completed within the allotted 20 minutes.
